Why is the volume chart indicator not working for Nifty or other indices?
Why is the volume chart indicator not working for Nifty or other indices? Find a clear answer in this FAQ by 021 Trade.
The Volume indicator does not work for indices like NIFTY 50, BANK NIFTY, or other indices because indices themselves are not directly traded instruments.
Why volume is not available for indices
- Indices are just a calculation of multiple stocks (for example, NIFTY 50 is calculated using 50 companies).
- Since you cannot buy or sell the index directly, there is no actual traded quantity.
- Volume indicators work only when there is real buying and selling of that instrument.
Where you can see volume instead
If you want volume related to Nifty movement, you can check:
- NIFTY 50 constituent stocks (Reliance, HDFC Bank, etc.)
- Nifty Futures charts โ these are tradable, so volume is available
- ETF tracking Nifty like Nippon India ETF Nifty BeES
Simple example
- NIFTY 50 index chart โ No volume
- NIFTY Futures chart โ Volume available
- Individual stock chart (e.g., Reliance) โ Volume available
